This painting has many layers to it, including a layer of mulberry paper. This gives me a way to work that has more depth, with letters or lines showing through to the top layer. The black calligraphic lines are some of the first I did with a new goat hair/synthetic mix brush. I love the flow the brush allows me. The silver is actually palladium leaf, which doesn't tarnish like silver does.
My paintings are never planned. They have a beginning, usually inspired by a poem I wrote, where I start with some marks and see what needs to go next. It is a very interactive process; the paintings form as I am creating them. They always lead me somewhere, and I never know where until it is done.
